The Sun Met 2020!

With a catchy hook, an inspirational violin melody and a beat that's bound to have you running to the dancefloor, Basel Grey's Just Do You was a shoo-in for the official song of The Sun Met 2020. But there's more to it than meets the ear…

As a kid, Basel Grey struggled with his weight and suffered from low self-esteem. This experience is the inspiration for his song, Just Do You.

"The message behind the song is being true to yourself," Grey explains. "I had issues with my weight growing up. When I got a platform through singing, I wanted to encourage others. Anything is possible if you believe in yourself. Whether you have a 9-to-5 or walk around with feathers all day to make a living, just be true to yourself."

The Idols alumnus caught the attention of Sun International Events and Entertainment Manager Gareth Flusk when performing the song at an event earlier this year. "He asked me to send the track to him and a week later, I was told that it would be the theme song for Sun Met 2020," beams Grey.

The theme for the 158th running of The Sun Met is "African Luxury: Visionaries", and calls on racegoers to express their vision, creativity and innovation. "We want to pay homage to the visionaries," explains Flusk. "To introduce a platform where creatives of all kinds can showcase their ideas. To write and share their stories through fashion, music, tech and horse racing. Where imagination comes to life in all aspects."

Grey says he can't wait to see what racegoers – especially young visionaries – have to offer on the day. "I want to see how other people will leave their mark at the event. My other passion is horses – I can't wait to see the race and all the fashion on show at the event."

The Sun Met takes place at Kenilworth Racecourse in Cape Town on Saturday, 1 February 2020. General access tickets go for R200 each. For ticketing information, please visit ticketpros.co.za. Hospitality packages are available from R2 995 per person.
