10 things you need to know
about The Sun Met 2020

Africa's Richest Race Day, The Sun Met, will be back at Cape Town's Kenilworth Racecourse on 1 February 2020

Since becoming the headline sponsor three years ago, Sun International has taken The Sun Met (formerly the Metropolitan Mile) to new #Levels of high fashion, glamour, entertainment and horse-racing thrills.

The Sun Met 2020 will once again draw the country's high-profile personalities and horse-racing enthusiasts to Cape Town's Kenilworth Racecourse to experience the style, fashion, entertainment and splendour of Africa's Richest Race.

Here are 10 things you need to know about The Sun Met 2020:

1. Tickets

A general access ticket goes for R200 and gives you access to all public areas and the official after party. You can buy them from Ticketpro and outlets around Cape Town.

If you're looking for something a little more exclusive, Circa has hospitality packages starting from R2 000 per person. You'll have lofty surroundings from which to enjoy the action, complimentary food and drinks, access to the after party and much more.

2. Who's bringing the bubbly?

A day at the race isn't complete without bubbly. House of BNG is the official celebration partner for The Sun Met 2020 and the House's two variants, Brut and Brut Rosé, will be filling every flute, tulip and coupe at Kenilworth Racecourse.

3. The horse racing

The final field will be announced on 21 January 2020 at the Barrier Draw at GrandWest Hotel and Casino in Cape Town. What's a Barrier Draw, you ask? It's a random draw to allocate the starting stalls for each horse. If you will be placing a bet, it's a good idea to pay attention to the draw, as many believe it can have a significant impact on the outcome of the race. Many pundits argue that horses that land in the inside stalls will be in the best position to win. That being said, it's not guaranteed. Many factors can affect the outcome of the race, including the starting position, the condition of the track and the size of the field. But just to be safe, pay attention to the Barrier Draw...

The Sun Met is not called Africa's Richest Race for nothing, with the primary race offering a R3 million prize.

4. Dress code

The theme for The Sun Met 2020 is "African Luxury: Visionaries". We're calling on all racegoers to feel inspired by their inner vision, creativity and innovation and arrive ready to transform Africa's Richest Race Day into a harmony of visionary imagination. Still clueless about what to wear? Take inspiration from the official The Sun Met 2020 campaign, with Visionaries Bonang Matheba and reigning Miss South Africa Zozi Thunzi, who've been styled by acclaimed fashion designer and Visionary Palesa Mokubung.

5. The entertainment

The fantastic entertainment on offer is as thrilling as the horse racing. Leading the pack is "Africa is not a jungle", which showcases the finest South African talent, including DJ Black Coffee, Euphonik and Da Capo. Sama-winner Holly Rey will also be on the bill, along with choreographer and DJ Courtnae Paul. HeartFM DJs Tyrone Paulsen, Codax and Vernon Carver will be on the decks throughout the day and during the after party. Just in case you missed it, all Sun Met ticket-holders will enjoy complimentary access to the official Sun Met after party.

6. Food and drink

The public arena will host a variety of premium culinary experiences, bar facilities and performances throughout the day. Hospitality ticket-holders will be well catered for in their suites.

7. Parking and road closures

Racegoers can make use of the Chukker Road parking facility at R100 per car, with a free shuttle service to the Kenilworth Racecourse entrance. Parking tickets can be bought ahead of Race Day at TicketPro.

8. The fashion

Various fashion designers will showcase their designs in-between the races at the Entertainment Marquee. The cream of South Africa's talent, including Imprint ZA and The Sun Met 2020 Visionary Palesa Mokubung, will be wowing racegoers with their best designs and creations.

9. Best-dressed competition

Once again, there will be a best-dressed competition. The prizes will be announced in the weeks to come, but will include a gift voucher for Canal Walk shopping centre and a bottle of BNG.

10. What to bring

Everything you need will be available at the venue; however, you may want to bring a few of these important items:

  • ID: especially if you're going to place a bet on the day
  • Bank cards: ATMs will be available around the venue
  • Sunscreen and a hat
  • Something warm to wear if you plan to stay for the Sun Met after party

Please note that no alcohol may be brought into the venue and firearms, weapons, fireworks or explosives are not permitted at Kenilworth Racecourse.
